ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill has passed away at age 72, the band announced today.

His bandmates of over 50 years, Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard, payed tribute to their friend on social media: “We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX.  We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top’. We will forever be connected to that ‘Blues Shuffle in C.’ … You will be missed greatly, amigo.”

Hill played in the Texas blues/rock trio with guitarist Billy Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard for over 50 years.  With Hill, ZZ Top became extremely popular as they brought a new style to the blues.

The group achieved success in the mainstream with 1983’s Eliminator, featuring hits “Sharp Dressed Man”, “Gimme All Your Lovin’”, “Legs” and more. The have a cult following throughout the South as well as fans all over the world.
