My July 4th Tradition

1776
1776

Many families have different traditions for the 4th of July. There is usually a grill filled with burgers and hot dogs, fireworks, and lots of red, white, and blue. My family added something very fun and somewhat educational to that list. We would watch the movie 1776. If you’ve never seen it, the summary is pretty simple. It’s a musical surrounding the creation and signing of the Declaration of Independence. The film follows John Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and the entire Continental Congress in Philadelphia s the argue, yell, and sing their way out of colony status with England.

It may not be historically accurate with every fact, but this is a great movie for the entire family. The adults can enjoy the story while the kids can learn the names of some of the most important founding fathers. Those of you who remember the show Boy Meets World will recognize the man playing John Adams… William Daniels. That’s right! Before he was Mr. Feeny, Daniels played the stubborn, obnoxious, and disliked Adams.

My family would sit and enjoy this movie, sing along with the songs, and have a great 4th of July together. I hope you do as well!
